In 1880, the 14th July became France National Day, a day in honour of the Republic. On 14th July 1789, the people of Paris captured the Bastille, a prison and a symbol of absolute power of Louis XVIs Ancient Régime and released the prisoners held
there. This day became the French symbol of the end of the Monarchy and the beginning of the First Republic.
Today, the festivities of July 14th are still very popular. In Paris, there is the traditional military parade on the Champ-Elysées shown live on national television. All over the country, even in small villages, dances and firework displays are organised. If you are lucky you can even party longer as some places organise events on the 13th and some on the 14th.
